What’s Happening
Since January 2025, more than $1.5 billion in NIH funding has been frozen. At the same time, proposed legislation (H.R. 1497) would dismantle the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the cornerstone of federal support for allergy and immunology (A/I), splitting it into three separate institutes. If these changes move forward, the consequences for our specialty and our patients will be profound.

What’s at Risk
NIH funding supports:
•    Research on asthma, food allergies, eczema and immune deficiencies
•    Clinical trials at academic centers
•    Training the next generation of A/I specialists
•    Access to innovative treatments nationwide

Breaking up NIAID would sever vital connections between allergy, immunology and infectious disease research, halting critical progress and collaboration.

Why It Matters
This isn’t just about science, it’s about patient care and public health. Unified allergy, immunology and infectious disease research is essential for pandemic response, vaccine development and protecting against future health threats. Weakening NIAID undermines this preparedness.

Impact on A/I
NIH funding has enabled:
•    Biologic therapies for asthma
•    Breakthroughs in food allergy immunotherapy and prevention
•    Improved eczema treatments
•    Better care for immune deficiencies

Without it, clinical trials will stall, breakthroughs will slow and fewer allergists will be trained, especially in rural and underserved areas.

What AAAAI Is Doing
To fight these threats, AAAAI has launched the Scientific Community Task Force for A/I Research. This task force is actively advocating in Congress to oppose H.R. 1497, demand the release of frozen NIH funds, and protect essential research infrastructure.
